What is the LRS?
The Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) of the North County Bar Association is Northern San Diego County’s leading lawyer referral service, providing the community with free referrals to experienced attorneys licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California. The non-profit service began in 1982 and is sponsored by the North County Bar Association.
 
How does the LRS work?
Northern San Diego County residents with a legal issue contact the LRS either by telephone (760-758-4755) or via its Internet website (www.lawreferral.org) and summarize their legal matter. Trained and experienced LRS consultants then refer the inquiry to the most appropriate Northern San Diego County-based attorney. All inquiries are handled with the strictest confidentiality. Those contacting the LRS can receive a referral to an attorney within minutes; those contacting the LRS via the Internet website will receive a reply within one business day.
 
Why should the North County community with a legal question contact the LRS?
Northern San Diego County residents who contact the LRS are referred to an attorney and are entitled to a free, 30-minute consultation regarding their legal issue. As a non-profit organization, the LRS has been a free, public service for the Northern San Diego County community for more than 23 years. For more than two decades, hundreds of thousands of North County residents have come to rely on the LRS for free referrals; annually the LRS handles over 10,000 inquiries. The LRS program includes 100-plus Northern San Diego County-based attorneys. More than 17 different areas of the law are represented in the LRS.
 
What qualifications do the attorneys in the LRS have?
Attorneys admitted to the LRS program must have demonstrated qualification and experience in a particular area of the law and be engaged in the practice of law in Northern San Diego County. They are among the most experienced in Californiaall are licensed, carry malpractice insurance, and are in good standing with the State Bar of California. The LRS is certified by the State Bar of California (California State Bar Certification #0027), and meets lawyer referral standards set forth by the American Bar Association.
 
How many attorneys are in the LRS program?
Currently, more than 100 Northern San Diego County-based attorneys are part of the LRS program.
 
What areas of the law are represented in the LRS program?
We have attorneys in more than 17 different areas of the law. These include Bankruptcy; Civil Litigation; Criminal; Construction Industry; Corporation/General Business; Family Law; Personal Injury; Probate; Real Estate; Real Estate Litigation; Taxation; Wills, Trusts and Estate Planning; Workers’ Compensation and more.
 
What if my case is unusual (e.g., what if there aren't attorneys in the LRS who can help me)?
In some situations, those contacting the LRS will be referred to other legal resources for their legal issue that do not require attorney consultation. These additional resources include Legal Aid, The San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, North County Lifeline, Inc., Community Services, The Women’s Resource Center, and the Labor Board.
 
What if the lawyer you refer to me doesn't work out? Will you refer me to another attorney and will that consultation be free?
Should a rare situation occur where the initial consultation is not satisfactory, the community will be referred to another attorney for a second consultation.
 
Do you provide a list of the attorneys in the LRS program upon request, or on your website?
We do not provide a list of the attorneys in the LRS program. The Northern San Diego County residents with a legal issue should contact the LRS either by telephone (760-758-4755) or via its Internet website (www.lawreferral.org) and summarize their legal issue. Do you provide referrals to free attorneys, or attorneys offering discounted services for low-income households?
The LRS does not provide referrals to free attorneys. Some attorneys may be able to arrange payment plans.
 
What will I need for the initial consultation?
You should bring all relevant documents and information related to the legal issue, and should also be prepared to clearly explain your matter so it can be understood by the attorney.
 
Can the LRS program assist Spanish speakers?
The LRS provides certain services for Spanish speakers. As necessary, the LRS will also refer select cases to other resources including Legal Aid, The San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program, North County Lifeline, Inc., The Women’s Resource Center, and the Labor Board.
